Arlington, VA (Sept. 25, 2020) – The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) expressed opposition to a US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) proposed rule to eliminate duration of status (D/S) for international students and exchange visitors.
Currently international students are allowed to remain in the US if they are enrolled in school and abiding by the immigration rules relevant to their student status. Under the proposed rule, DHS would impose strict limits on the time a student is allowed to remain in the US, even if that time period conflicts with the student’s enrollment at a school or college.
“This announcement is a continuation of policies that suggest a hostility toward international students and risks further damaging the economic and financial stability and campus culture at our nation’s schools and colleges,” stated Angel Pérez, NACAC CEO. “At a time when institutions are struggling to enroll students, this administration’s continued insistence on xenophobic policy will further harm our economy and America’s place in the world as a higher education destination.”
