Lisa Vasquez
College & Career Advisor/AVID Teacher
Woodside High School (CA)

What drew you to the world of college admission counseling?
I am a first-generation college student like many of my AVID students. My Okinawan-American grandparents taught me to value education and compassion. I would not be the person I am today without those values. My maternal grandfather was a gardener near the high school I attended, so he knew that it was one of the best in Los Angeles — and warranted the sacrifices my mom made to pay the tuition. I strive to help our students make the most of their high school experience and promote the resources that can help them realize their full potential and goals.

What is your favorite part of the job?
I love helping students research their options for life after high school. I have the opportunity to learn about local internships, international programs, and amazing majors that I can share with other students in the future.

How has NACAC played a role in your career?
Inspired to join while completing UCLA’s College Counseling Certificate Program, NACAC has been the key to more resources and connections (e.g., WACAC).Although I haven’t been able to attend as many conferences as I wish I could have, I appreciate NACAC’s online resources and advocacy efforts.
