Allison Slater Tate
Director of College Counseling
Lake
Mary Preparatory School (FL)

What drew you to the world of college admission counseling?
I have loved the process since I was in high school myself. There is something about being part of people’s lives at such a pivotal moment that I find very fulfilling and meaningful.

What is your favorite part of the job?
The teenagers! They give me hope for the future.

How has NACAC played a role in your career?
NACAC has given me a chance to meet and connect with others who are similarly passionate about our ability to make a difference in this world. I love the fact that it includes individuals on all sides of the desk and gives us ways to understand and appreciate our roles in this process and how we can help each other and, most importantly, our students.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our profession today?
Mental health — the students’ and ours.

When you aren’t working, what do you like to do?
Listen to Taylor Swift, preferably in person.

If you could be any fictional character, who would it be and why?
Olivia Pope. I like to be a fixer, and I want her wardrobe.
