Noa Bejar
Director of College Guidance
Hebrew Academy of Greater Miami (FL)

What drew you to the world of college admission counseling?
Like most counselors, I fell into the role organically. There was a growing need for college guidance support at my school and I was fortunate enough to join the team and dive into the role of supporting the post-high school goals of our students.

What is your favorite part of the job?
It is so rewarding to empower young people to pursue their dreams, to motivate them to dig deep with their essays, and to watch them complete the process with excitement and confidence. They grow so much throughout the process, and I love being on the journey with them.

How has NACAC played a role in your career?
NACAC has played a pivotal role in connecting me with other professionals, specifically through my Special Interest Groups. Additionally, SACAC’s Summer Seminar for new professionals gave me a great foundation to really thrive in this profession.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our profession today?
I think there is an inordinate amount of pressure on today’s teenagers that we cannot truly fathom, pressures that didn’t exist when we were students. Through patience and frequent interactions, such as a weekly class for juniors to work on their college applications, we can help alleviate a lot of anxiety surrounding the college process. I also think that expectations placed on our teens are done so by those that do not have teenagers themselves and therefore those benchmarks lack a level of understanding and relatability.

When you aren’t working, what do you like to do?
Visit Israel! They have the best beaches, coffee culture, and sense of national pride. I love wandering among the cobblestone streets and immersing myself in Israel’s vibrant energy.”

What two words would you use to describe yourself?
Compassionate and helpful!
