McKenzie Sullivan
Assistant Director of Admissions
The University of Akron (OH)
What drew you to the world of college admission counseling?
I first became interested in becoming an admissions counselor after becoming a student tour guide at my alma mater. I enjoyed showing prospective students, their families, and supporters around campus and helping them through the process. The admissions counselors in the office noticed how much I enjoyed it and talked to me about making it a career.
What is your favorite part of the job?
My favorite part of the job is helping prospective students and their families! As a first-generation college graduate, I’m very in tune to the needs of prospective students — whether they are also first-generation, the first child of college graduates, or the last of their siblings to go. I enjoy breaking down the process as much as they need, walking them through their options, and helping them find their best fit.
How has NACAC played a role in your career?
The professional development opportunities, such as the annual conference and NEXT, keep me up to date on relevant topics, connected to other professionals, and in tune with my future as a leader in this profession.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our profession today?
Our biggest challenge currently is the question of whether a college degree is valuable. In a world that favors instant gratification, more and more students are drawn toward career paths that offer immediate earning potential instead of understanding the long-term benefits of increased earning potential over time and the career stability a college degree can offer them.
When you aren’t working, what do you like to do?
When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband, dog, friends, and family. I enjoy traveling, trying new restaurants, reading, and Pilates.
What five words would you use to describe yourself?
Difference-maker, advocate, creative, supporter, and mentor.
