Marquez Young
Director of Admissions
Sinclair Community College (OH)
What drew you to the world of college admission counseling?
I was drawn to admissions through a desire to expand access and create opportunity. Community colleges sit at the intersection of access, affordability, and transformation, and I have always been motivated by work that directly impacts people’s lives. Admissions allows me to remove barriers, simplify complex processes, and help students see pathways that they may not have thought were possible.
What is your favorite part of the job?
My favorite part of the work is helping students move from uncertainty to clarity. Whether it is a student returning to school, navigating funding requirements, or figuring out their next step, being part of that moment where things start to click is incredibly meaningful. I also value building systems and teams that make that experience more seamless for every student we serve.
How has NACAC played a role in your career?
NACAC has provided a valuable space to connect with professionals across different institution types and share best practices around access, equity, and enrollment strategy. It has helped me think more broadly about how our work fits into the larger landscape of higher education and has strengthened my approach to collaboration and student support.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our profession today?
One of the biggest challenges is balancing access with complexity. Students, particularly adult learners and those navigating funding or life responsibilities, need timely, clear, and coordinated support. When systems are fragmented or processes are unclear, students can easily disengage. As a profession, we must continue improving how we deliver consistent, student-centered experiences while managing limited resources.
When you aren’t working, what do you like to do?
When I am not working, my focus is on being the best I can be to my family. I value being present, creating meaningful moments, and making memories with my girls. I also enjoy spending time with friends, staying connected, and being around the people who matter most to me.
What five words would you use to describe yourself?
Advocacy-driven. Purposeful. Impact-driven. Collaborative. Practitioner-scholar.
