What drew you to the world of college admission counseling?
My own college recruitment journey inspired me to enter the world of college admission counseling. I remember the profound impact that admissions staff members had on me during recruitment events and college fairs. Finishing college, I reflected on how I could assist others in their college search journey. I realized that this field was a natural fit for my skills and passions. Helping students navigate this pivotal time in their lives is incredibly rewarding and fulfilling for me.
What is your favorite part of the job?
While I truly enjoy assisting prospective students and their families, my favorite part of the job is working with our current student employees. I might be a bit biased, but I believe student employees in admissions offices are among the most important on campus.
Helping our student tour guides and recruitment hosts share their personal stories about selecting a college and thriving (as well as facing challenges) on our campus is the most authentic aspect of my work. Prospective students are eager to hear from their peers about the highs and lows of college life. Additionally, I love witnessing our students’ growth throughout their college experience. It’s incredibly rewarding to hear from former students who have graduated and moved on to successful careers, started families, and are doing great things in their communities.
How has NACAC played a role in your career?
I joined NACAC and Ohio ACAC (OACAC) when I started as an admissions counselor in 2003. What I appreciate about the association, both then and now, is its commitment to supporting our students and one other in higher education. As a young professional, NACAC introduced me to the importance of communication, collaboration, and connection with school counselors and community-based organizations. The phrase “You’ll learn more from the other side of the desk” still resonates with me today.
NACAC continues to play a significant role in my career even 22 years later. Staying informed about current trends, topics, and concerns that impact our students is crucial. NACAC also provides opportunities to learn creatively and share strategic ideas that other offices are implementing. I truly appreciate the collegial nature that NACAC members bring to their work.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our profession today?
Two major themes come to the forefront for me:
- Declining Support for American Higher Education: Providing affordable access to education is important now more than ever. It has become increasingly difficult for us as a profession and community to serve our students amid a lack of financial and foundational support. I appreciate NACAC’s crucial advocacy for our students.
- Mental Health Support: Our society is grappling with numerous issues, and our students, as well as ourselves, need robust support. It’s vital to find ways to de-stress, calm our minds and bodies, and prioritize mental health.
When you aren’t working, what do you like to do?
When I’m not working, I love following various Olympic sports, with a special passion for elite and NCAA women’s gymnastics. Last year, I had the incredible opportunity to take a dream trip to the Paris Olympics with my sister, where we witnessed Team USA bring home the gold!
I also enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends, reading, creating music playlists, watching Marvel movies, and trying new recipes to become a better cook.
If you could be any fictional character, who would it be and why?
Right now, it’s Ellie the Elephant (aka Big Ellie), the mascot for the WNBA’s New York Liberty. Ellie has the style, the confident attitude, and the dance moves I wish I had! Ellie is such a powerful brand and creative representation of sports culture and women in sports. She’s an icon. She’s a legend. She is the moment.
