Dominique Harrison
Director of Undergraduate Admissions
North Carolina A&T State University

What drew you to the world of college admission counseling?
I actually fell into college admissions. I was working a corporate job during the recession in 2008-2009 and my department got laid off. I had a friend from undergrad who was working in admissions at North Carolina A&T who reached out to me about a temporary “roadrunner” position that was open. They felt that with my background and interests I would enjoy it and do well. I applied, interviewed, got the job, and have been in the profession ever since!

What is your favorite part of the job?
Creating and improving systems that help to improve access, eliminate barriers, and provide awareness and opportunities for students and families in the college admission process.

How has NACAC played a role in your career?
I have gained many practical tools, mentors, and lifelong colleagues who have helped me and challenged me to grow, develop, and lead. NACAC also provides research that aids the work that we all do. And the association has been a major advocate for the important issues that shape the higher education landscape.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our profession today?
The population we serve is becoming more and more diverse in many respects. Finding ways to serve while navigating demographic shifts, affordability, ever-changing policies, technological advancements — all while making sure to protect our staff and their well-being — is our reality. The biggest challenge is how do we do all these things while making sure that the value of pursuing higher education is known and obtainable.

When you aren’t working, what do you like to do?
Rest when I get the chance to! Run, enjoy time with friends and family, build Lego sets, watch sports, or try new foods.

What five words would you use to describe yourself?
Laid-back. Collaborative. Empathetic. Supportive. Sneakerhead.
