What drew you to the world of college admission counseling?
Like many of my colleagues, I stumbled into the field of admissions. Throughout high school and college, I envisioned myself as a teacher and coach. Consequently, I earned an undergraduate degree in secondary education with a focus on Broadfield Social Studies. While I enjoyed teaching and helping students navigate their futures, I soon discovered that the confines of a classroom didn’t suit me, and I lacked the patience required for teaching. A friend suggested I might excel as an admissions counselor, and they kindly arranged for me to shadow someone in that role. That experience opened my eyes to the possibility of a career in admissions and I realized it was my true calling.

What is your favorite part of the job?
Engaging with people has been a rewarding aspect of my work in admissions. This role has provided me with the opportunity to meet a diverse range of individuals, which I find truly enriching. I am also a passionate advocate for equity and access in higher education. My work in admissions enables me to support all students in obtaining the educational opportunities they need to pursue their dreams.

How has NACAC played a role in your career?
NACAC is truly exceptional. This organization has significantly contributed to my growth, from the valuable insights gained at the convention to the opportunities for joining committees, which have allowed me to network with others in the field. It has also been rewarding to meet individuals with diverse roles within admissions. My involvement with NACAC has greatly enriched my understanding of admissions and higher education.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our profession today?
I believe that one of the most significant challenges facing our profession is the ever-evolving landscape of higher education, which encompasses issues related to diversity and inclusion as well as changes in legislation, among other factors. It is essential for me to stay informed to provide those I work with the most accurate and relevant information.

When you aren’t working, what do you like to do?
I am a sports fanatic. I love attending Milwaukee Brewers and Bucks games, as well as watching a lot of sports on TV. I developed an interest in soccer and track and field because my kids enjoyed the sports. Otherwise, I enjoy spending time with family and friends.

If you could be any fictional character, who would it be and why?
T’Challa of Black Panther. I admire T’Challa because he leads with strength and integrity in a ever-evolving world. He balances tradition and progress while facing challenges from within and beyond his community. I’m constantly balancing the past and the future, advocating for growth while honoring the values and identity of the communities I serve. Like T’Challa, I strive to lead with integrity, listen deeply, and stand firm.
