Clarissa S. Russell
Associate Director, Regional Recruitment and Outreach

What drew you to the world of college admission counseling?
I’ve always enjoyed meeting students where they are in their growth journey and helping them realize how higher education may fit. It all started as a tour guide many, many moons ago. Since that time, I’ve enjoyed the roles of academic assistant within housing; regional manager in admissions; and now, associate director.
What is your favorite part of the job?
Graduation. When I meet a high school student and their family who did not know about my university, I support them with navigating the college admission process then watch the student matriculate toward a degree and GRADUATE. My heart is full. There is no greater joy than seeing a family celebrate the journey of a student beginning their professional career and being a part of that process.
How has NACAC played a role in your career?
NACAC has been instrumental in helping me to learn about new trends in higher education and how to reach students while navigating those trends. The resources and education I receive during conferences, webinars, and GWI are vital to my everyday work life.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our profession today?
Great question. Navigating the political climate and the impact it has made on access to higher education and affording higher education are two of the biggest challenges I believe face our profession today.
When you aren’t working, what do you like to do?
Travel. While admissions does require a significant amount of professional travel, I enjoy a significant amount of personal travel as well. My experiences in various areas of the country and world help me to expand my knowledge on how to work with all students and their families.
Which words would you use to describe yourself?
Resourceful.
Adventurous.
Positive & Energetic.
Creative.
Organized.
Empowering & Blessed.
