What drew you to the world of college admission counseling?
Like most of us, I fell into an admissions counselor position. I wanted a job in higher education that would have eventually led me to athletic administration. Once I started meeting with students/families and discussing the college search process, I was hooked. I did not realize I was a first-generation student until I started working in admissions. I was shocked by all the things I did not know during my college search process. It made me want to be a resource for students. I had the opportunity to help them find their path after high school. When I started, I heard this is a role that could be for three or 30 years. I am on my path to 30.
What is your favorite part of the job?
Even though my current role takes me away from this on a consistent basis, I love having conversations with students and their families. The best part of those conversations is when the student has their “lightbulb moment.” They understand that they have the power to make the best decision for themselves.
How has NACAC played a role in your career?
NACAC has helped me think broader about higher education and the role we play as educators and advocates for students.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our profession today?
I think there are two. One is the price of attending our institutions of higher education. I wish students were able to make the best choice regarding their postsecondary path without finances being the main factor. Then, all students could just focus on their academic and social fit. Two is retaining admissions staff. From the stress of making the class, to budget squeezes, to paying staff their market value, it has become harder to keep people in our field.
When you aren’t working, what do you like to do?
My wife and I love going on cruises. It has become our yearly carrot that we chase. It is important to take breaks and enjoy time by yourself or with loved ones.
If you could be any fictional character, who would it be and why?
I am a huge Marvel fan and my favorite superhero character is in the DC Universe. So, I would be a cross between Captain America and Batman. That way, I would have the mindset and resources to help as many people as possible.
