Amy Chung
Associate Director of Undergraduate Admission
Boston College (MA)

What drew you to the world of college admission counseling?
Like many of us in the field, I was an overly involved undergrad. I developed a love for higher education through my mentors at Emmanuel College (MA). My admission counselor played a big role in my college search experience, and I hoped to be a resource for other students going through this process.

What is your favorite part of the job?
There are so many pieces of the admission and enrollment cycle that I really enjoy, but seeing our students grow throughout the four years of their undergraduate experience is the greatest joy in my work. It is a privilege to be part of this journey with our students.

How has NACAC played a role in your career?
Being a member of NACAC has helped me grow my community within the field. There is such power in sharing community and knowledge. Having the opportunity to attend the NACAC conference and GWI has allowed me to think deeply about the impact of our work and be informed on trends in our profession.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our profession today?

While there are many challenges our profession faces, I think the rising cost of higher education and the perception of its value is a prevalent issue. Funding for educational institutions and for students is critical to expand access to higher education for all.

When you aren’t working, what do you like to do?
I love to read — ideally on a beach! I also do freelance calligraphy and perform as a vocalist with a colleague in an acoustic duo. I greatly enjoy spending time with my family, especially my 8-month-old niece!

If you could be any fictional character, who would it be and why?
This question stumped me! I think I’d choose Elle Woods from Legally Blonde. Elle shows us that you don’t have to sacrifice who you are to be successful. Her story also teaches us that there is power in lifting others up!
