Alex Morris-Wood
Head of School
Franklin Academy (CT)

What drew you to the world of college admission counseling?
I was drawn to this field through my work with neurodivergent students. Supporting them as they explored their interests, found the right educational pathways, and gained access to higher education was incredibly rewarding. Helping students realize their goals and potential remains at the heart of why I do this work.

What is your favorite part of the job?
I especially enjoy working with parents to help them understand how best to support their student during the critical transition from high school to college. These partnerships often lead to transformational growth for families and students alike.

How has NACAC played a role in your career?
NACAC has been pivotal in shaping my professional journey. It’s where I found my voice as a presenter and formed meaningful collaborations with both secondary and postsecondary institutions around systemic change for students with disabilities. As co-chair of the Disabilities & Neurodiversity SIG, I’ve had the chance to amplify the importance of neurodivergent inclusion in higher education. NACAC continues to inspire me with fresh ideas and helps inform my leadership as a head of school.

I joined NACAC to help elevate the conversation around neurodiversity in college access. My goal is to create more inclusive pathways and advocate for intersectional understanding within our profession. I hope to continue learning from colleagues and expanding opportunities to foster belonging for all students.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our profession today?
Family engagement. Since the pandemic, families are more involved than ever — which presents both a challenge and a unique opportunity. It calls on us to build even stronger partnerships that are rooted in transparency, empathy, and shared commitment to student success.

When you aren’t working, what do you like to do?
I love to travel — whether it’s exploring a new city, enjoying live theater, or spending time with my family. Those moments of connection and discovery are energizing.

What five words would you use to describe yourself?
Motivated, ambitious, sarcastic, humanistic, and flexible.
