Joel Barlow High School (CT)
What drew you to the world of college admissions?
As a school counselor, college admissions is a large part of assisting students in navigating the waters of high school.
What is your favorite part of the job?
My favorite part of the job is watching students grow and mature over the course of the four years I get to work with them — assisting them to better understand themselves as a student and as a young adult, and to find a place where they will ultimately thrive.
How has NACAC played a role in my career?
NACAC has given me a community to turn to with dedicated professionals who have the best interests of students as a driving principle.
Biggest challenge facing the profession today?
Uncertainty. In my 35-year career I have never experienced the amount of uncertainty that I have over the past several years. Looking toward the horizon it does not look like things will stabilize soon.
When you are not working, what do you like to do?
I love spending time with my wife, three children, and dog.
If you were a fictional character, who would you be?
I would be a hybrid mashup of Atticus Finch (To Kill a Mockingbird), Samwise Gamgee (Lord of the Rings), and Phil Dunphy (Modern Family).
