Brandon Mack is the Associate Director of Admission & Coordinator of Transfer Admission at Rice University. He has been with the Office of Admission since 2009. Mack works specifically on international recruitment in Africa, domestic recruitment strategies, and building counselor relationships. He has also worked on minority recruitment initiatives, community based organization partnerships, and community outreach efforts to educate students on highly selective college admissions. He also oversees and manages the transfer admission process and is the liaison to the Rice School of Architecture.
In addition to his day job, Mack is a community activist and sociologist dedicated to issues related to the intersections of race, gender, and sexual orientation. He has conducted research on effemiphobia, the negativity related to effeminate gay men. His work has been featured in a GLAAD Media Award winning article and he has presented his work at national conferences such as the National LGBTQ Task Force: Creating Change and NBJC's Out on the Hill.
Mack graduated from Rice University in 2006 with a Bachelors of Arts in Sociology & Political Science. In 2013, Mack earned a Masters of Education in Higher Education Administration & Supervision from the University of Houston. He is currently a Ph.D. student in the Higher Education Leadership & Policy Studies at the University of Houston.

Why are you serving on the Faculty Advisory Committee?
“I think I bring a variety of different lenses to the Faculty Advisory Committee. I have been in the field for 10 years and have worked my way up to the associate director level. I can bring the perspective of someone who had been at the entry level for a number of years and is now currently in the middle management level and the experience of being committed to diversity, access, and inclusion, while also having to navigate institutional priorities and the feeling that you cannot offer ideas because of your position in the office. I am also an activist with Black Lives Matter Houston and the LGBTQ+ community, so I can bring the activist lens to working in college admission. I also bring an intersectional lens of being a Black, Queer, person working in the field and also working with various communities. I bring my research experience with focusing on making higher education more equitable for students from diverse racial, gender, and sexual orientation backgrounds.”
