NACAC Congratulates 2017 School Counselor of the Year

Arlington, VA (Jan. 6, 2017) — The National Association for College Admission Counseling joins educators and policymakers from across the country today in celebration of 2017 School Counselor of the Year Terri Tchorzynski.

Tchorzynski, a counselor at the Calhoun Area Career Center, in Battle Creek, Michigan, was honored this morning as the 2016 School Counselor of the Year during a special ceremony at the White House.
The award, presented annually by the American School Counselor Association, honors professionals who go above and beyond to help students succeed. The recognition also helps shine a spotlight on the important role school counselors play in promoting college access and success.

NACAC is pleased to note Tchorzynski’s achievements include leading workshops designed to help students apply to college and navigate federal financial aid.   

A recent NACAC report using US Department of Education data found that high school students who met one-on-one with a school counselor during the college search process were:
•    6.8 times more likely to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
•    3.2 times more likely to attend college.
•    Twice as likely to attend a bachelor's degree program.

Today’s School Counselor of the Year celebration serves as an important reminder of the value these professionals add to our schools, said NACAC CEO Joyce Smith.

On average, public school counselors are responsible for serving 476 students per year. In some states, the average student-to-counselor ratio is as high as 900 students per counselor.

“We greatly appreciate the contributions of school counselors to the lives of students across the country,” Smith noted. “We also appreciate the President’s and the First Lady’s support for school counselors as a vital part of our educational system. We hope that the new administration and new Congress will not lose sight of the fact that it takes people—and people who care—to help educate our children, and that it takes a substantial public commitment to ensure that equitable educational opportunity is available to all of our students.”
