Arlington, VA (March 13, 2020) —The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) today canceled its National College Fairs spring season following warnings from health officials about the increased risk of spreading COVID-19 (coronavirus) in large gatherings. The association had already canceled eight of its college fairs earlier in the week.
NACAC had been monitoring news from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), convention centers, and local school and government officials in each region, and previously had planned to move forward with the season’s remaining fairs. But as more Americans were diagnosed with the virus, more schools closed, and more states issued bans on large gatherings, the association decided to cancel the remaining fairs, including 23 National College Fairs and three STEM College and Career Fairs.
At present, NACAC still plans to start its National College Fair fall season on Sept. 10 in Indianapolis.
“We work closely with facilities and vendors from around the country throughout the year to provide a safe environment for all our programs,” said Pia Brown, National College Fairs director. “The safety of participating college and university representatives, students, and families is always paramount. We canceled the fairs out of an abundance of caution to ensure the well-being of all participants.”
College fair exhibitors, pre-registered students and parents, and counselors in each region were notified about the cancellations.
