NACAC Opposes Decision to Eliminate Gainful Employment Regulations

Arlington, VA (July 2, 2019) — The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) announced today that it strongly opposes the Department of Education’s decision to eliminate the gainful employment regulations, which are critical to helping ensure that our nation’s tax dollars are effectively used to help students obtain a quality education.

For nearly a century, there has been a repeated pattern of unscrupulous colleges prioritizing their own financial interests ahead of students’ educational interests. The Department of Education finally took steps to address this chronic problem by implementing the gainful employment regulations in 2015. These regulations sought to ensure that institutions provided an adequate education and prevented unscrupulous colleges from subjecting students to high-pressure recruitment tactics that left students with unpayable debts, academic credits that would not transfer, worthless certificates or degrees, and few (if any) improved employment prospects.

By repealing these regulations, the Department of Education has undermined its mission, hindered the educational prospects of thousands of students, and put billions of taxpayer dollars at risk.
