Assistant Director of Admissions
Wayne State College (NE)
What drew you to the world of college admission counseling?
What drew me to college admission counseling was my experience as a tour guide during my undergrad years. However, my admission counselor (Adriana Gomez-Barajas) helped me in every step of the way as I was navigating the college search process. Adriana made a positive difference in my life. Being a first-generation college student, I faced many fears and doubts. Adriana offered extra hand-holding and empowered me to do better. She reminded me that I AM a leader, so she inspired me to enter this profession.
What is your favorite part of the job?
My favorite part of the job is working with students and their families as they navigate the college search process. I am fortunate to be bilingual (English and Spanish) because I can communicate with Spanish-speaking parents in their own language, and explain to them the importance of supporting their son/daughter in this journey.
How has NACAC played a role in your career?
NACAC has played a major role in my professional development. I attended Guiding the Way to Inclusion two years ago and had the opportunity to meet many people like me who work with underrepresented students. Thanks to NACAC, I found good mentors who guide me in this profession.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our profession today?
One of the biggest challenges today is selling higher education’s return on investment. Many families know about the increasing costs of higher education, student loan debt, and starting salaries right after college. It is very important to be transparent with families about cost and the payment options that are available.
When you aren’t working, what do you like to do?
I like to spend time with my family, especially my niece Sofia; walk outside (during nice weather); work out (Zumba); listen to podcasts; and watch telenovelas (Spanish soap operas) on Hulu.
What five words would you use to describe yourself?
Dedicated. Empathetic. Passionate. Talented. Generous.
