What drew you to the world of college admission counseling?
I worked in higher education admissions, as well as an adjunct instructor, for years prior to opening my own firm. During that time I worked with students who identified as LGBTQIA and/or were neurodiverse learners. I saw a need to work with them to research and seek out appropriate colleges/universities that met their individual needs.
What is your favorite part of the job?
Working with students and seeing the look in their eyes when they “get it” or when they get those acceptances and start to realize that they DO have a place that they can fit in and call home for four-plus years. It’s fulfilling to help students realize the potential they have and what they bring to the table.
How has NACAC played a role in your career?
I joined NACAC as I feel that it is the connection between counselors and all things college. As a newer member I really enjoy the opportunities for growth and learning. I also like that it helps me stay informed about things happening in the industry. My last professional business trip was NACAC’s 2020 Hill Day in DC. After that, everything shut down and we entered the virtual universe we now live and work in.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our profession today?
The coronavirus. This has impacted everything we do as counselors, independent consultants, colleges and universities—literally everything. With budgets already stretched, this pandemic is going to cause a ripple effect throughout the profession. I think we will see some colleges close; we will see some eliminated majors and/or clubs and sports. I just think this is going to cause widespread challenges for the entire education industry.
When you aren’t working, what do you like to do?
Spending time with my husband and cat these days, as there is not much we can do during the pandemic, although I have taught myself how to knit, make jewelry, and draw over the past year. I also love to travel and have circumnavigated the globe with my husband. I love to cook (I’m a trained chef) and I like to bake when I have the time. I also like to go for long walks when the weather is nice, as it helps clear my head and keeps me grounded.
What five words would you use to describe yourself?
Passionate. Enthusiastic. Welcoming. Creative. Empathetic.
