Meet Jason Schueller

Jason Schueller
Coordinator of Academic Placement and Enrollment
Grand Rapids Community College (MI)

How did you become the coordinator of academic placement and enrollment at Grand Rapids Community College?
I previously worked at a four-year university that worked closely with GRCC. I spent a lot of time on the campus working with students and faculty, and felt very fortunate when a position opened up that was a perfect fit.

What is your favorite part of the job?
Being on a college campus every day. It is a fun and engaging environment working with students, staff and faculty. I had a great time in college and now I get to go to work every day at a college.

How did you get involved with NACAC’s College Fairs and what does that experience mean to you?
I was asked to join our region’s planning committee a few years ago and really enjoy it. I have lived in the Grand Rapids area my whole life, which has helped me build relationships with many of our local high schools and colleges.

Do you have any advice for professionals new to the field?
Working in higher education is great. I think it really helps for anyone working on the administrative side of things to find a way to teach at least one or two classes a year as an adjunct faculty. The combination of staff and faculty experience can really help build your career.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing counselors today?
Reminding students that it is okay if they do not have their whole life figured out. I think there is a lot of pressure on students in high school and college to have their whole education and career path figured out at such a young age. Work hard, but enjoy it.

When you aren’t working, what do you like to do?
Spending time with family and friends, golfing, watching sports, boating, and more golfing.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you be?
Superman

Describe yourself in five words.
Fun, Relaxed, Athletic, Positive, and Interested.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Make sure your home is in order and take care of your business. Alright now!
