Data Security for Higher Education

Data security is increasingly important as there are a plethora of data breach attempts on businesses and institutions around the world. Higher education institutions are especially enticing to malicious hackers as they hold large quantities of financial data. NACAC has compiled this list of data security resources for higher education to help institutions protect student data and confidential information.

  • European Union General Data Protection Regulation Guidance

    In April 2016, the European Parliament and European Council approved the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR); the rule takes effect beginning May 25, 2018. Any institution that processes and/or maintains data of students or citizens of the EU is subject to these regulations.

  • ​The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

    ​The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 is a federal law that affords parents the right to have access to their children's education records, the right to seek to have the records amended and the right to have some control over the disclosure of personally identifiable information from the education records. When a student turns 18 years old, or enters a postsecondary institution at any age, the rights under FERPA transfer from the parents to the student ("eligible student").
