Governance and Nominating Committee Chair
The 2016-2017 Governance and Nominating Committee is beginning the process of identifying highly qualified candidates for the NACAC Board of Directors who will be elected in 2017. This is a task that the members of the Governance and Nominating Committee take very seriously, and it calls for dedicated attention from both the committee and the NACAC staff. As the committee begins work on this task there is always concern about having a strong and diverse pool of seasoned members submit their names to insure that the nominee slate will include the right mix of candidates.
Former committee member, Cathy Boehlke McMeekan, accurately expresses the feelings of GNC members with the following comment: “I never realized the complexity of selecting the slate of nominees until I became part of the Governance and Nominating Committee. Much like colleges are trying to shape a class from an abundance of highly qualified candidates, so too, the GNC is trying to create a slate that will round out the attributes of the NACAC Board…”
This year, there are four positions to be filled by election of the Assembly: three board directors and the president-elect. Board directors serve for a term of three years. The president-elect serves a three-year presidential cycle, followed by an additional year as chair of the Governance and Nominating Committee. Any NACAC member who meets eligibility requirements may submit for any of the vacancies, and as a reminder, there are a variety of ways a member can be considered eligible – whether that be service on a national or affiliate committee, as an affiliate president, as an Assembly delegate, or as NACAC professional development program facilitator or faculty.
Whatever form that prior service takes, the Governance and Nominating Committee seeks NACAC members who have shown a strong commitment to the admission and counseling profession and have served affiliates and the national Association through substantive leadership roles. Our goal is to present a slate of nominees that is representative of the diversity of our membership, and so there is no one type of prior experience that is considered, or ruled out, either.
Individuals interested in being considered as candidates for the 2017 NACAC Board of Directors election must meet qualifications described in the Call for Candidates: 2017 Board of Directors Election Information. All applicants must complete a biographical information form, as well as providing references and a letter of support from their current institution, to be submitted by March 1, 2017. All forms and procedures are outlined on the NACAC web site.
Service on the NACAC Board provides unparalleled experiences for personal and professional growth, in addition to an opportunity to provide direction to the profession and our association. Many former board members describe their service as a professional “capstone.” I urge you to seriously consider the contributions that you might make as a member of our Board of Directors.
Please feel free to contact me or any member of the Governance and Nominating Committee to discuss your interest.
