How do your experiences align with NACAC’s new mission and vision statements?”

NACAC’s new Mission and Vision Statements ensure that this organization will provide the education, advocacy, and community necessary for counseling professionals to meet the challenges ahead. My experiences working in college admissions for 15 years combined with the extensive leadership roles I have served in at the affiliate and national level have naturally brought me into alignment with this mission and vision.

Working at Penn State University – Brandywine for 15 years, access and attainment are at the core of my work at my campus, and I have dedicated my time to helping each student from the best and brightest to the lost and afraid achieve their goals. I serve on seven different school district advisory boards throughout Pennsylvania and use that platform to advocate for students and school counselors. I deliver Mock Interview workshops in a number of my schools, going class by class to help students regardless of their future goals to develop interview skills. On campus I work along with two of our faculty members to run the Council for Latinx and African American Student Success (C.L.A.S.S) to mentor underrepresented students, offer them unique programming, and to provide a safe space at a PWI.

At the affiliate level I have had the privilege of serving in many leadership roles for Pennsylvania ACAC, none of which aligned me with NACAC’s Mission and Vision more than my recent Presidency in the 2020-2021 year. I know what it is like to lead in adverse and uncertain times. I know what it is like to lead an organization through tremendous fiscal losses due to the cancellation of events, but still needing to generate revenue in order to keep the organization afloat. I know what is like to empower those who work with you in leadership to continue providing programming and community for their colleagues while at the same time extending grace and understanding as we all battled to keep ourselves and our families healthy and safe. I know what it is like to see a clear deficiency in diversity, equity, and inclusion within your organization and programming and unapologetically address it by diversifying your Board and program faculty, and by creating an award-winning Promoting Inclusivity and Equity Workshop Series. I know the ins and outs of the NACAC/Affiliate relationship and how to bridge those gaps because I was doing it positively and proactively while a part of the Affiliate Presidents Council.

I entered the admissions profession for one reason: I needed work experience. I remained in admission for two reasons: the impact I was able to have on students and the relationships I was building with school counselors that fueled me to give more of myself. I thrive in admission now for three reasons: professional development, the platform I have and use to advocate for students and colleagues, and being immersed in a community of educators, leaders, and thinkers who are determined to make a difference. May I continue to align with the Mission and Vision of NACAC.
