How do your experiences align with NACAC’s new mission and vision statements?”

It is with great honor and humility to be considered to serve on the Board of Directors at the National Association of College Admission Counseling. The opportunity to serve the membership will allow me to carry on my mission of helping others in their postsecondary opportunity. I will attempt to show how my experiences align with NACAC's new mission and vision by looking through personal, professional, and servant leadership windows.

As a child, my parents instilled the importance of education with the belief it would deliver me from the ranks of poverty. However, I can only remember having one conversation with my school counselor about going to college during the fall of my senior year. As we all know, this conversation is far too late for me to match with the correct college opportunity. Fortunately, Coach Blanding cared enough to help me locate my college opportunity 30 days beyond my high school graduation date. Coach Blanding understood my dreams, and as a result, he became educated, built a community, and helped my teammates and me with our opportunities. This life-changing extra mile act is the intrinsic motivation I use to teach my community what I know about the college admission process and beyond.

As a professional, I have spent the lion's share of my career at Historically Black Colleges and Universities because they offer the most incredible opportunity for students to earn a college degree. However, over the last ten years, we have witnessed a massive shift with the proliferation of colleges and universities offering test-optional policies and clearing the path for more students to gain access. Moreover, I introduced a test-optional policy at a university, and the net result has remained positive. Lastly, I have spent most of my professional career learning from those who came before me and giving information to the professionals behind me.

Throughout my professional career, I have worked with planning local events sponsored by the Southern Association for College Admission Counseling and provided School Counselor workshops in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Alabama to equip them with information in assisting them with helping their community. In addition, I conducted drive-in seminars for high school seniors in the southern region on the nuances of the college admissions process. I have continued to serve on strategic planning and governance and nominating committees. Lastly, providing volunteer support services at each of the NACAC conferences I attended over the years.

I hope these examples provide the transparency needed to gain your support. Please trust that I will continue to follow personal core values, add to our profession, and continue service to NACAC as opportunities become available.
