Report of the Commission on the Use of Standardized Tests in Undergraduate Admission

To address increasing public concern about standardized admission tests and their greater importance in undergraduate admission over the past decade, NACAC convened a Commission on the Use of Standardized Tests in Undergraduate Admission.  After a year-long study, the commission released a final report  highlighting its findings.

There is growing awareness of the value of subject tests within the national admission community. The National Association for College Admission Counseling has recently called on American colleges and universities to re-examine their emphasis on the SAT and ACT and to expand the use of subject tests in admissions. NACAC's commission on testing, which wrote the report, included many high-profile admission officials and was chaired by William Fitzsimmons, dean of admissions and financial aid at Harvard.

Excerpt from Chapter 6: "In September 2008, the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) released a report by a commission chaired by Dean Fitzsimmons (Report of the Commission on the Use of Standardized Testing in Undergraduate Admission," National Association for College Admission Counseling, Alexandria, VA, September 2008, hereafter NACAC [2008]) proposing that colleges and universities give less emphasis to the ACT and SAT and that the entire standardized testing process, including the use of tests, be reformed (along with the tests themselves). Overall, the conclusions of the Fitzsimmons Commission closely mirror the broad thrust of the arguments presented in this chapter"
