Guiding the Way to Inclusion

Register today for NACAC’s 2009 Guiding the Way to Inclusion (GWI) workshop. GWI is a three-day professional development workshop designed for college admission officers who recruit domestic students of color from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Admission officers new to the field and those with up to five years experience are strongly encouraged to attend. This year’s sensational workshop speakers include:

  • Arnaldo Rodriguez presenting Recruiting in a Stressed Economy
    Rodriguez, director of admission at Pitzer College (CA), will offer insights about changes in admission and recruiting in a changing economic landscape, as well as ways to attract and recruit students using new, effective and budget-mindful methods.
  • Phyllis Braxton presenting the two-part series, Understanding and Creating Cultural Competency
    Braxton is president and CEO of Pursuing Intellectual Needs and Knowledge (MN) and will focus on the shared meaning of the language of diversity and inclusion in recruiting and retaining students of color and why some diversity programs succeed while others become paralyzed.
  • Walter Robinson presenting Multicultural Recruitment: One Size Does Not Fit All
    Robinson, director of admission at University of California – Berkeley, will discuss the shift in the universal definition of multiculturalism and diversity, exploring cultural competency, disabled, sexual orientation, undocumented students, and race and ethnicity.
  • Michael Poindexter presenting Community Colleges
    Poindexter is director of student services at Sacramento City Community College (CA). He will present the intricacies of the community college system and offer ways to build partnerships with local community colleges.
  • Greg Miraglia presenting Advising GLBT Students
    Miraglia, dean of Career Technical Education at Napa Valley College (CA), will explore ways in which multicultural recruiters can be more inclusive, welcoming and respectful of LGBT and ally people.
  • Lydia Zendejas presenting Outreaching to Latino Students and Their Families
    Zendejas, national program director at the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (CA), will discuss strategies for outreach to and recruitment of the Latino student population.
  • Sharmon Goodman presenting Community-Based Organizations
    Goodman is director of College Scholars Program for One Voice (CA). She will emphasize how community-based organizations can provide a vital link between college admission offices and underrepresented student populations.

In addition, the GWI faculty and directors will present sessions on the staples of multicultural recruitment including: building a diversity recruitment plan, territory management, program planning and evaluation, and more!
