In an effort to examine the impact of the economic crisis on the college admission process, NACAC conducted a survey of its high school and college members in May and a follow-up survey in September to identify trends as a result of this uncertain period. Adding to the annual pressures facing students and colleges alike, the economic downturn caused a great deal of concern for colleges and students about the outlook for Fall 2009.
Due to the economic environment, high school counselors and colleges anticipated decreases in operating budgets as well as increases in college applications and financial aid as students and families explore options beyond the conventional.
The survey results confirmed that college admission and counseling officers at secondary and postsecondary schools encountered fiscal difficulties, greater interest in financial aid among students and families, and change in student programs to reflect changes in the economy.
