Adolescent Development and the Transition to College: Psychological and Social Considerations

NACAC offers this Research to Practice Brief to assist counseling and admission professionals in three primary ways:

  • to provide a summary of the major aspects of the adolescent development process
  • to outline ways in which the timing of the admission process may not be congruent with adolescent development
  • to provide suggestions for how counseling and admission professionals can be sensitive to students’ developmental needs throughout the admission process.

Information presented in this brief is based on "College Choice and Adolescent Development: Psychological and Social Implications of Early Admission," a discussion paper written for NACAC by Dr. Barbara Schneider of Michigan State University.
