Journal of College Admission, Winter 2007
NACAC has published a community-college-themed, special issue of the Journal of College Admission. Written by community college professionals and other education professionals, this issue dispels community college misconceptions with reliable research and expert opinion.
It looks closely at new methods and technologies; the realities involved in transferring to a four-year institution; how community colleges compare to traditional institutions; the emerging trend of honors courses; and many other trends educational professionals need to know. (3/07)

Differential Characteristics of 2-Year Postsecondary Institutions
A report from the National Center for Education Statistics presents brief profiles of seven different types of 2-year institutions: small publics, medium-sized publics, large publics, allied health not-for-profits, other not-for-profits, degree-granting for-profits, and other for-profits. The report focuses on four broad topic areas—institutional resources, student characteristics, institutional affordability, and measures of student success—to highlight the key differences that set a particular institutional type apart. Career/Technical Education Statistics (CTES)
The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) has expanded and renamed its Data on Vocational Education (DOVE) website. The website is now called Career/Technical Education Statistics (CTES), and includes a new section of "CTES Tables on the Web." Based on analyses of NCES datasets, this section provides summary data tables that describe career/technical education at the secondary and postsecondary levels and adult education for work. (4/07)
Career and Technical Education: Best Practices and Programs
The Association for Career and Technical Education has launched a Web site highlighting innovative programs and creative teaching found in career and technical education across the country at community colleges, high schools and career centers. The Web site is designed to show how a variety of schools and institutions have found creative solutions to their problems and to spark ideas that can be adapted to other settings. (4/07)

Emergency Financial Aid for Community College Students: Implementation and Early Lessons from the Dreamkeepers and Angel Fund Programs
This report from MDRC describes early evaluation findings on the design and implementation of the Dreamkeepers Emergency Financial Aid Program and the Angel Fund Program, two pilot programs for community college students who are at risk of dropping out because of unexpected financial crises. Eleven community colleges and 26 tribal colleges and universities are participating in the two programs, which have disbursed grants or loans to more than 900 students. (2/07)

Act on Fact: Using Data to Improve Student Success
Research performed by the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) gathers data about institutional practices and student behaviors that are highly correlated with student learning and retention. The results of the survey, which is administered directly to community college students at CCSSE member colleges during randomly selected classes, include benchmarks and institutional benchmark scores for five key areas of engagement: active and collaborative learning, student effort, academic challenge, student-faculty interaction, and support for learners. The Department of Education NCES issued a report that provides a statistical snapshot of the undergraduate population focusing on community college students. Data is meant to focus on the relationship between a measure of degree commitment and student persistence among these students. (6/06)
