Dear WACAC Community,
Many of you are aware and have expressed concern regarding the reports pertaining to the Governor's May Revision proposal to modify the 2009-10 State budget and eliminate the Cal Grant program.
The Governor proposes to eliminate new awards for the Cal Grant Program (including the High School Entitlement, California Community College Transfer Entitlement, Competitive, and Cal Grant C Programs). His proposal seeks to continue Cal Grant funding for eligible renewing students for the 2009-10 fiscal year. The Governor's May Revision proposal is now subject for consideration by the California Legislature as part of the development of the final State budget.
I would encourage all of you to take action and contact your local Assembly member and Senate member. Your voice matters. Visit http://capwiz.com/nacac/issues/?style=D to take action. You are able to edit the letter to add any personal stories and comments. If you have the time, visit their home offices in your district and express your concern. Ask for their support to Save the Cal Grant. Finally, attend the CA Legislative Conference in February. The Cal Grant has always been our top priority. Remember that you are the expert.
At our conference next week, we will have a computer station where you can take action to Save the Cal Grant. We will also be asking you to take action on the federal level. The Pathways to College Act was introduced in the Senate and House on May 2, and NACAC could use your support. I also want to thank all of you who took action on the Dream Act.
As of next week, I will no longer be your Government Relations Chair because my term has come to an end. Please direct any questions you may have to our incoming President Minh-Ha Hoang at mhoang@sandiego.edu.
Have a great week, and see you next week at Chapman.
Sincerely,
Gina Aguirre
Western ACAC
Government Relations Chair
