Stories from School Counselors and Admission Officers

Hear from NACAC members about the budget challenges and services sacrificed in their offices.

Video (2:26): Jeff Morrow, Director of College Counseling at Oaks Christian High School (CA), reacts to the financial crisis. "One of the things that worries me about students, high school students specifically in California and in the district where I live, is that as the economy has gotten worse less families can afford things like private education. But as the state budget is also a mess, the funding for public education in the area has gone down as well."

Video (0:59): Chano LaBoy, Educational Counselor at Goddard Riverside's Options Center for Educational and Career Choice (NY), reacts to the financial crisis. "What this really sends home to me is the crucial fact that education should be a number one priority for the government."

Video (0:44): Cynthia Bonn, Dean of Admission at a public flagship univeristy in New England, reacts to the financial crisis. "I'm thinking that this is going to be a problem not only now in the present but in the future for our university, for our region and across the nation."

Video (1:01): Susan Cohen, Associate Director at the Cooper Union (NY), reacts to the financial crisis. "The other thing that I've seen students talk about a lot more recently is how they're going to pay for their healthcare."

American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009

In response to the lagging economy, Congress and the Administration have developed economic stimulus packages that include emergency funding and tax cuts (The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, or HR 1). NACAC supports the inclusion of initiatives designed to provide educational opportunities for students who might otherwise not be able to afford them.
