Session II: 10:15am to 10:45am
A. The Math Side of Broccoli- Room 317A
Presenter: Milica Barjaktarovic, Assistant Professor in Computer Science, Hawai’i Pacific University
Math has been around forever. For example, Hawaiians used math to build their sea canoes and navigate using the stars on open ocean. Sea shells, trees, flowers, etc. follow certain mathematical formulas. Pretty geometric tile, quilts, nesting bamboo baskets, Hawaiian tattoo patterns, pyramids, computers, Internet, computer games, digital music, cell phones, etc. and of course finance, etc. are all based on math. In this short class, we will explore the fun side of math and how math is used.
B. NCAA Eligibility, Talent is Not Enough: The Academic Side of the Athletic Scholarship Game- Room 318AB
Presenter: Wayne M. Tanna, JD, LL.M, Professor of Accounting, Member NCAA Minority Opportunity and Interests Committee, former compliance office and member NCAA Academic Requirements Committee, Chaminade University
If you want to play the game in college you have to know the rules. This session will outline the process that is required for all student-athletes who wish to be eligible to play on a college team and to qualify for athletic scholarships during their freshmen year at the NCAA Division I and II levels. If there is a possibility of participating in college athletics, it is important that you attend this informative presentation to discover what many recruiters don’t always tell you.
This presentation will provide information for prospective college athletes, including: (1) Basic information on the NCAA and the NCAA Eligibility Center and (2) The Four-Year Plan 9th – 12th grade, the process of becoming eligible.
C. Fun, Friends, and College!: Joining a student club and participating in student activities can enhance your college experience- Room 317B
Presenters: Alfred Gonzales, Assistant Student Engagement Coordinator, Kapiolani Community College
Student clubs and student activities can range from the politically charged to admiring a Hollywood star. Whatever the topic or theme maybe, student clubs and activities have kept students involved with campus life, and in most cases helped with their academic performance.
